Hi everyone;
Below is today’s update. We will begin pushing out updates every day like below. Thanks. Jay
Utilities
As of 5:00 PM today, 8% without power in the City of Naples (1,690 customers) 5.5% without power countywide (12,920 customers). FPL is actively working with City staff to investigate damage to vaults and electrical equipment in many of the condos in Park Shore, which was worse than originally expected. An update is expected early tomorrow.
Comcast Cable services are coming back online throughout the community. Progress with cable will follow power restoration.
Cellular Services are also improving as towers continue to come back online. There are spotty areas in certain parts of the city, including the downtown area. A mobile tower for Verizon was placed near city hall.
Water & Sewer plants are fully operational. We hope to have a decision about the boil water notice tomorrow. Waiting on the results of the required sampling.
We are experiencing some fluctuations in water pressure, which can be attributed to the increase in use for power washing, filling pools, etc. Please call the City at 239-213-4799 if you observe any illegal use of hydrants by contractors.
Roads and Alleys
All roads within the City are now passable. Road crews are in the process of removing sand piles from the areas that received 2-3 feet of sand on the roads and beach ends. Crews are also brushing dried mud and running multiple street sweepers to pick up fine debris. These actions will continue until all roads are back to normal.
Our crews are now assessing alleys and will soon begin cleaning them up.
Debris Removal
Regular solid waste collection has resumed and is being picked up on a normal schedule, except for horticulture debris.
Debris removal trucks arrived in the City yesterday to begin removing storm-related debris in certain areas that were hardest hit.
Debris removal operations will officially begin tomorrow, Wednesday, October 5. This will be a monumental operation and will likely extend for the next several months. In terms of volume, imagine a football stadium filled with debris 40 feet high to the mezzanine level. This doesn’t include horticulture debris or white goods (appliances).
Please pay close attention to the instructions provided by the City regarding separating material into various piles (Horticulture, C&D (lumber, carpets, furniture, etc), White Goods (appliances – please empty).
We will make as many passes as we need to collect all the debris so please don’t feel hurried to set everyone out at one time.
Safety & Security
A county-wide curfew is in effect from Midnight to 6am and the City has a curfew specific to residential areas from 10pm – 6am. Residents driving home or taking a walk outside during these times are perfectly able to do so.
Police will strictly enforce this curfew for individuals who do not live in residentials areas and will remain on high alert while patrolling all corners of the community.
FEMA Assistance
FEMA officials were on the ground in the City today with the Mayor and Fire Chief.
We expect the arrival Disaster Assistance Teams, who will be going door to door in the community. We are also working on getting survivor assistance teams in the city to assist those who will need long-term housing and other support while homes are begin repaired.
